What Will Your New Year's Resolution Be This Year?

Every year at the start of the New Year we make our resolutions and goals for the next year. This tradition still around today was commenced by a Roman senate in 153BC who declared the 1st of January to be the start of the year. He decreed that the mythical king Janus (January) was to be at the start of the calendar as he had the power to look back at the past into the future, thus from this mythology arose the tradition of celebrating the past year and making resolutions for the next. So what will you be celebrating from the last year? And what will your resolutions be? Here's a few of the typical resolutions people make.

Common New Year's Resolutions

New Year is time to contemplate over the last year, your achievements and failures, and look forward to the next. Looking back at the last year, will give you a chance to contemplate what you want from the next year, whether it be a career move or personal goal. Remember a resolution does not necessarily have to be a resolution to stop a habit, it can be a resolution to do something new or that you've always wanted to do.

Common resolutions are getting fit, losing weight, stop smoking or drinking, save money, leave more time for the family, acquire new knowledge or a skill, visit somewhere you've always wanted to and take a trip. Other resolutions include involving oneself more in the community groups, whether it's joining a book group or volunteering your time.

How To Achieve

So resolutions are vast and varied. They can be whatever you want them to be, as long as they are achievable. But for them to be achievable you'll need them to be realistic goals that can be done in that year. It's for instance no good planning a trip if you don't have the means to save the money for it. For a resolution to work you may also need encouragement from friends and family (this is especially related to behaviors that you want to stop, i.e. smoking). Also tell your friends and family about you resolutions and ask them to encourage you along the path, helping you avoid going back to those behaviors. It may also be best to plan out how you are going to achieve your goal, so map out the milestones and each time you reach a goal give yourself a pat on the back. Mapping the small achievements towards your goal will help you feel encouraged, enabling you to see the resolution right through to the end.

So whether you goal is to cut down on drinking due to the excessive amount of drinks consumed at the Shared Christmas parties for your office, or take a trip of a lifetime, it is achievable . So what New Year Resolutions will you be making this year
