General Amos, the highest ranking United States Marine, says that he believes Marines will die or lose limbs if Don't Ask Don't Tell is repealed. His reasoning is that gays are a distraction.
It is all too common for closeted men haunted by their own sexual insecurities to persecute open and happy homosexuals for living productive and satisfying lives. General Amos continues a long history of closeted gays causing harm to the community and our society by propagating hate from positions of power.
General Amos joins Admiral Mike Mullen in continuing a disturbing new trend of insubordinate Generals during Obama's tenure as President saying"I don't want to have any Marines that I'm visiting at Bethesda [National Naval Medical Centre near Washington] with no legs be the result of any type of distraction." This statement is ironic for two important reasons.
First, the very first Marine wounded in Iraq, Sgt. Eric Alva, is openly gay and working to get Don't Ask Don't Tell Repealed. Sgt. Alva lost his leg and received a purple heart from President George W. Bush. Secondly, and I think most entertaining, is the idea that having gays serving openly in the Marines would be a distraction. There are already countless numbers of gay Marines serving proudly and many of them have told comrades that they are gay.
I think the public should have an opportunity to question General Amos about why he believes that gays would be a distraction after Don't Ask Don't Tell is repealed. Is it that having a bunch of openly gay men would make him want to have sex when he should be fighting a war? General Amos is obviously insubordinate by purposefully waiting until he could spew his unsubstantiated opinions without having to explain himself in front of a Senate Committee.
Don't you think it is time General Amos resign and join the likes of Mark Foley (R) of Florida, Roy Ashburn (R) of California, and George Rekers by getting outed as gay and gracefully leaving the public spotlight to retire somewhere in Vermont and open up a Bed and Breakfast with his partner Richard.
