Amnesia is unusual forgetfulness that can be caused by brain damage due to disease or injury, or it can be caused by severe emotional trauma. Amnesia refers to a loss of the everyday sense of memory responsible for knowing facts, events, information and experiences. Causes of memory loss:

1. Accidents / Head injury:

Head injuries because of various kinds of accidents are the most common reason for memory loss after old age. This type of head injuries are on the rise because of rapid urbanization. When a person has a head injury, the brain gets damaged. The brain can get damaged because of direct injury or even because of the lack of blood supply to a part of the brain because of the injury. Whatever the reason, the death of the part of the brain can lead to either a transient amnesia which is a temporary loss of memory. It can also lead to a total loss of memory.

2. Stroke:

Stroke or cerebrovascular accidents are another cause for a person to have loss of memory. This is a condition that can affect a person similar to the head injury in that there can be death of a part of the brain. If the part of the brain dead is associated with the memory of a person, then there will be loss of memory in the individual. In head injury, the memory loss is due to a injury to the brain, but in those affected by stroke, the brain dies because of the lack of blood supply to the brain that causes the brain not to have any Oxygen that leads to the death of the part of the brain.

3. Diseases:

There are various kinds of diseases that are also associated with the loss of memory. Some of the common diseases that cause memory loss include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and chronic depression. All the diseases that can cause a person to have loss of memory are those that affect the brain in some way or the other.

Home remedies for memory loss

There is no home or herbal remedies for memory loss. But, certainly there are some easy tips that help you prevent and treat memory loss.

1. Family should provide full support. Reality orientation like providing familiar music, objects or photos will help the patient become oriented. Relearning help may be required in some cases.

2. Medication schedules if any should be written down. This will avoid dependence on memory.

3. Extended care facilities like nursing homes are very helpful for people whose basic needs cannot be met in any other way or whose safety or nutrition is in acute danger.

Diet for Memory Loss

1. Blueberries. Blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants which can help to improve the the short-term memory.

2. Eggs. Eggs contain lecithin which helps to improve the memory nerve cells. Sunflower and soybean oils are also rich in lecithin. If you decide to take lecithin in capsule form, studies have shown that taking 70 grams of lecithin a day can help to improve memory.

3. Okra. Okra has been found to be a memory enhancer. So are sweet potatoes, tapioca and spinach.

4. Pistachio nuts. Sometimes memory loss can be attributed to thiamine deficiency. Pistachio nuts are full of thiamine (vitamin B1). Taking a 1/2 cup of pistachios can supply the body with 0.52 mg of thiamine. The daily recommended allowance of thiamine for women is 1.1 mg and for men 1.2 mg.

5. Wheat germ. Wheat germ is rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E can benefit from age-related memory loss.
