What was Japanese bank Nomura's loss is Cheyne Capital's gain as a former Morgan Stanley banker joins the London hedge fund.

Cheyne Capital Management has appointed John Hyman as a partner. Hyman has more than 23 years of experience in the equities industry and joins from Morgan Stanley where he worked for 17 years as co-head of global capital markets, co-head of global equity capital markets and oversaw all of Morgan Stanley's equity transactions in EMEA and Asia from 2005 to 2009. Cheyne Capital manages net assets in excess of $6 billion across a diversified range of products.

John Hyman is joining Cheyne as a partner, the firm said in a statement.

Hyman was co-head of global capital markets at Morgan Stanley before he left the bank at the beginning of the year.

He was supposed to go to Nomura in the Spring, but reports at the time said that the Financial Services Authority wouldn't give him the required approvals. Those reports may have been off-base, as the regulator gave its blessing to the Cheyne move.

In England, senior management and board members of an authorized firm, including hedge funds, must be approved by the FSA.

Cheyne has been in expansion mode, raising $100 million for an event-driven fund in September. That fund is now at $180 million in AUM.

The firm also has done well with a real estate debt fund, raising more than $600 million since it launched in August 2009.

Cheyne Capital is a London-based alternative asset manager. The firm launched its first fund in 2000 and today specializes in corporate credit, event-driven, equity, and equity-linked funds. It is one of the largest alternative asset managers in Europe[1] with mandates from pension funds, foundations, family offices, and funds of funds. The Cheyne group currently employs approximately 140 people with its primary offices in London, New York, and Bermuda. It was founded in 1999 by Jonathan Lourie and Stuart Fiertz who are currently the CEO and President of Cheyne Capital Management (UK) LLP respectively. Cheyne Capital Management (UK) LLP is authorised and regulated by the U.K. Financial Services Authority (FSA).
