Now, the six classes of drugs that manage type 2 diabetes mellitus include sulfonylureas, biguanides, thiazolidinediones, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, meglitinides, and DPP-4 inhibitors. Sulfonylureas work by allowing the pancreas to release more insulin into the blood which lowers the glucose level. Biguanides work by affecting the production of glucose that comes from digestion. Thiazolidinediones sensitize muscle and fat cells to accept insulin more readily. Meglitinides stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin in relationship to how much glucose is in the blood.
Because the immediate goal of treatment in diabetes mellitus is to lower high blood glucose levels, these classes of type 2 diabetes medication do play important roles in managing diabetes type 2.
