Children with Autism have difficulty with social interactions and communication. Most kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder seem to prefer to live in their own little world, aloof and detached from others. They prefer not to be touched, held, or cuddled; and they find it difficult to connect with other children. In fact, they appear disinterested or unaware of other people and their surroundings. They cannot look at things in another person's perspective, but their own. They do not share interests or achievements with others.
The problem with interaction probably stems from the fact that they have speech and language difficulties. They tend to repeat the same words over and over, respond to a question by repeating it, and refer to themselves in third person. It is difficult for children with Autism to understand simple directions or statements; and have the tendency to take what is said too literally, being unable to think in abstract terms. Moreover, they avoid eye contact and their facial expression is usually incongruent with what they are saying.
As for behavior, children with Autism usually develop specific routines or rituals, and are obsessed about following those rituals on a strict note. They move constantly and perform repetitive movements like rocking, spinning, or hand flapping. They would resist any changes made in their routine. Also, they may display aggressiveness and engage in self-injurious behavior like biting or scratching themselves or banging their head.
These symptoms of Autism in children may appear during infancy and last through their childhood unless the appropriate treatment is given in order to improve if not correct them.
