I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that "Advanced Seismic Testing" was developed by Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai, India.
An earthquake or tremoris the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are measured byseismometer and thisdevicerecordsearthquakes and gives seismograph to us. Usually we know these measures by hearing from radio and television.
In the earthquakes, the building structures will be damaged and some will be collapsed. For this, SERC has the expertise in this area and facilities for the experiments on structures and buildings.
SERC, Chennai has the expertise in the areas like Dynamic analysis and testing of complex machine foundations, Seismic qualification of industrial components, Blast resistant structures and Safety assessment and vibration isolation.
SERC has the Advanced Seismic Testing and Research Laboratory and this lab will do
Analysis, design, testing and evaluation of structures and structural components subjected to seismic loads are the major areas of expertise of this one-of-a-kind laboratory in India.
SERC has the major facilities for this advanced seismic studies, they are : 30 tonnes capacity, 4m X 4m, tri-axial shake table facility and 5 tonne capacity 2m X 2m, tri axial shake table facility. On this tables, the whole structures or building structures will be shaked for evaluating the intensity of tremors. SERC has the facility of Psedo-dynamic test facility consisting of four members of +50mm actuator and Response measurement and data acquisition capabilities for 128 channel.
This Area of expertise and facilities would be Enhancing Value of Knowledge in Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics. This Advanced Seismic Testing technology will do the following
*Seismic performance evaluation of buildings- Push over analysis, testing
*Base isolation,Development of rubber-based isolators,Shake table tests
*Passive energy dissipation devices- X-Plate, visco-elastic, shape memory alloy
*Seismic retrofitting Techniques, feasibility Beam column joints, improvements to detailing
*Dynamic testing of full-scale structures
