subject: How To Extend The Life Of Your Concrete Cutting Saw [print this page]

Concrete cutting saws and core drills have a wide variety of uses from cutting concrete and masonry to drilling holes for core samples. Maintaining these tools is critical, so here are some ways to keep your tools in the best condition:

Know what you are doing or hire someone that does. Harder materials, a risk of flying debris, and more complex tools make concrete cutting something best done by skilled professionals. If you dont have a skilled operator available, hire a subcontractor who knows what they are doing. Your job will be finished quicker and with much better results.

Speed matters. Concrete cutting saw blades differ from many other saw blades because the diamonds embedded on the blade file into the concrete. Saws with traditional blades require more torque to cut through materials with the jagged edge, but concrete saws rely more on speed. This speed, combined with the surface of the blade results in a smoother, sharper cut.

However, saw blades and drill bits of any kind are typically labeled with a maximum rpm. This is because the materials used to produce these parts can only tolerate so much friction, heat and stress. Dont exceed these recommended levels or you risk damage to the blade or bit, the tool itself -- as well as physical harm to you and your workers.

Use the right blade for the job. Dry cutting blades are often used for decorative cutting. These blades perform best when used for intermittent cutting of shallow grooves, and they are intended for handheld saws with low horsepower.

Wet cutting blades are typically used for large walk-behind saws. These blades are used to cut joints in flatwork. Water is used to cool the blade so that it is less likely to break or warp. It is possible to use a dry-cutting blade with water, dont use a wet-cutting blade dry.

Finally, use common sense when working with a concrete cutting saw or any other tools. Watch for frayed power cords, clean your tools after each use and put them in the appropriate casing. By following these tips, you can maximize the life and value of your concrete cutting tools.
