Soul Mate Dreams

What is this term, Soul Mate?' I see it everywhere. I used to think a Soul Mate was someone very special and the connection so spiritual and ethereal that only a few among us could ever find one.

Soul Mate- I knew a woman, who had those words tattooed on her ankle. She said she was living with hers. That did not stop her from suggesting that she and I could have a little afternoon delight when the opportunity presented itself. We didn't, of course- it felt cheap. I would have only been a greasy side order of hash browns next to her grand slam Soul Mate, breakfast plate.

The dictionary definitions vary, but officially, it appears to mean someone with whom you have a feeling of affinity; someone of the opposite sex. One dictionary includes the terms mistress' and illicit sex partner'- hardly spiritual or ethereal. I must have been misinformed.

Problem is; I hear the term so often that I have grown quite weary from guessing what the author or speaker is trying to say when they use the phrase. Perhaps this is where the problem lies. I presume the words are intended to communicate some value when they may only be garnish, kind of like adding roses and garlands to a wedding cake. They make the cake pretty but there is no increase in its nutritional value.

The term Soul Mate' sounds pretty, but it is close to being a meaningless term. Over use, I would guess.
