10 Tips To Better Salsa Spins

Spins are often overlooked in Salsa classes due to time constraints and student to teacher ratios. Below are 10 tips to a better spin from DanceSalsaInToronto.com

1) Stay on the balls of your feet during your spin. This is probably the first thing your teacher will mention in your Salsa Class.

2) Use the Spin 1 formula when training spins. You must be able to perform one spin flawlessly with proper balance and timing before trying to do two. Once you can do two you can work on 3 or more.

3) Spot before turning. This is usually emphasized early on in your Salsa class which most people often forget about. Make sure that you have spotted with your heard before completing the spin with your shoulders and the rest of your body.

4) Keep your shoulders even and proportional during your Salsa spinning. Have one shoulder higher than the other could make you uneven and throw you off balance.

5) Practice in front of a mirror so you could see your mistakes. This really helps especially when you are work on your Salsa styling.

6) Keep your knee(s) depending on the type of spin a little bent to help you preserve balance.

7) Do not over torque on your spin(s). Only prepare/torque up as much momentum as you need based on your number of spins. You will overturn and lose balance if you over prepared to do one spin while the momentum was really meant for 3.

8) Take regular breaks when practicing spins. It's normal for spin qualities to degrade as one gets a little dizzy and disoriented from spinning.

9) Feet, shoulder and then head is the formula so a proper spin.

10) Train Salsa spins on both sides. It is always good to train on both sides. We recommend that you start with a right turn first. Once you master that try a single left turn. Last by not least, there's no big secret. Once just needs to practice.
