The Deal with Anxiety

Axiety is a regular occurrence in our lives. People have experience it at one point or another and this is a normal reaction that is overcome by our defense mechanisms. Aside from our inherent defense mechanism we have other factors that help us overcome this uncomfortable condition. These include our friends and family, our work or school, leisure time and hobbies, to name a few.

But should these mechanisms fail, it can lead to anxiety disorder. This can affect our lives in all aspects, from work or school, social relations as well as personal relationships, and even health. A person can react to anxiety by doing too much work or neglect his work. He may try to compensate by isolating himself from friends and family or he may become too clingy and too outgoing to overcome the sense of panic.

Aside from behavior other things can be noticeable. He might suddenly go on a binge, consume too much alcohol or cigarettes, or he might lose his appetite altogether. Being emotionally labile or apathetic as well as being nervous most of the times may be noticed by the people around him.

A person must be aware of these conditions and seek help from a counselor or a professional to prevent its worsening. There are many schools of thought with regards to treatment of anxiety. Oriental cultures believe that an obstruction of Qi or energy flow in the body causes diseases. There are several points in the are known as channel for the energy flow and these points are blocked in diseases. The combinations of these points are specific to a certain disease. Targeting them to release the obstruction and restore the Qi will restore the health of the sick person. Each point has a specific function and contributes to the person's well being. They can increase circulation to the affected area, boost the immune system, increase the level of energy or increase the sense of well being to site a few functions. They are manipulated with pins, heat or pressure. These are some of the principles of acupressure and acupuncture. Some supplement treatment with relaxation techniques as it is believed that a peaceful mind is the key to healing. Yoga is one such treatment, as well as deep guided meditation and other meditative techniques such as tai chi. The principles vary but it all comes to the same result which is clearing the mind and relaxing the body.

Some people do not need to go this route as these needs lots of time and patience to master. Instead they take up a hobby where they can relax their mind and body. Some would go into retreat to the mountains, forest or beach. Others take up sports like swimming or running. There are also so who do charitable works.
