subject: Making the Most Out of Internet Marketing - Part II [print this page]

In Part I of this article I wanted to impress upon you, the new internet entrepreneur, that making money on the internet was not impossible but it was also not a 'slam dunk'.There are, however, certain parts of creating an online business that are very standardized. Tasks such as purchasing a domain name, creating a website and determining a hosting company are simple to do.A couple of simple suggestions are in order, however, in order to maximize the benefits you can receive if you do these things correctly.First of all, you'll need to obtain a domain name for you new online business. This, by itself, can be a challenge because most of the good ones are already taken. But, don't despair. With a little bit of creativity you'll be able to create one that will work for your business. The rules are:1. Keep the URL as short as possible. The less typing, the fewer are the mistakes.2. Make the URL pertinent to your business. This is just one of the ways you'll start branding your business so take some time to make it right.3. Try to use a ".com" extension if possible. If not .net will work as well.4. You might want to register several versions of the same URL (.com, .net etc.) to protect your branding.5. You might want to register several variations of the domain name to protect it from others registering it and therefore stepping you from using the different domain names in the future.Hosting your account can be very important but fortunately it is not very hard to do even if you're a total newbie. I would suggest that you use a well known hosting company and not one of the fly by night cheapies. Hostgator is one of my favorites because it is comparatively inexpensive, has great support and unlimited storage. Great value. Please do not underestimate the importance of great support. Even if you have to pay a bit more, it is well worth it if you can find the help you need when you need it. And I assure you that at some time in the future, no matter how knowledgeable you are, you will need help.As far as building a website, we'll talk more about that in Part III. At this juncture it is important to understand that a great deal of thought needs to go into building a website. It is your 'face' on the web and will tell your visitor who you are, what you are doing and what they need to do. But more about this in Part III.
