A security guard is a person who looks after our safety and keeps anti-social individuals away from us.Security guardsensure that we are not at risk of being harmed by a stranger or anyone else. They helpprevent thefts and guard people from being injured.
As a resultof this important job, security guards need to be well trained so they can perform their duties in a professional manner. If a security guard is not properly trained, he or shecould risk the area in whichthey look after.
Asecurity guard must be be alert, brave and daring to effectively perform the job. They need to know how to cope withany situation no matter how risky or daunting it might be. And they must be mentally and physically strong.
Security guards should be taught to be keen observers to spot suspicious activities. Guards must have goodeyesight and hearing to properly perform the duties of a security guard. Consequently, not everybody has the ability and professional skills necessary to be an effective security guard.
Security guards should be well trained, well informed, vigilant and be able to face any kind of hardship he or shemay have to face.
Security guards must take their training seriously. A security guard who does not value training not only endangers himself but also the communitythey serve.
Security guards should be required to complete a pre-assignment training course in professional patrol techniques, observation skills, quality(court ready) report writing, professional interviewing techniques, dealing with difficult people, (American Red Cross certified) first aid and CPR, preserving integrity of crime scenes, and site specific training. Security guards should be required to attend continued training at least annually.
Depending on the state and jurisdictionthe security guardwill be working in, if an assignment requires the guard be armed, he or she mustcomplete minimum additional training in the proper use of firarms, firearms safety, maintenance and care of firearms, and tactical training before receiving an armed security guard license.The course should involve a live fire exercise at a firing range. Check with appropriate governing agencies for the requirements to work as an armed security guard in the jurisdiction the armed guard will be working in. Annual firearms training is recommended. Firearms training should betaught bya National Rifle Association (NRA) certified instructor.
