Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation has been the most popular plastic surgery procedure for many years. Many women choose breast augmentation to enhance their looks, but it can be used to correct breast asymmetry.
The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are over the age of 18 and in good health. Women who have lost massive amounts of weight or have had children are ideal candidates, since breast augmentation can restore youthful perkiness to their breasts while evening out the size.
Breast Implants
There are multiple types of breast implants to choose from for your breast augmentation procedure. Silicone and saline have both been approved by the FDA to use as filers for breast implants. Silicone breast implants are generally more natural in look and feel, but require a larger incision. Saline breast implants allow for more control when evening out asymmetrical breasts, and involve a smaller incision to place the implant, but are somewhat firmer in feel and have a higher incidence of visible or palpable rippling.
You also have options when it comes to breast implant placement. Typically, breast implants are placed beneath the chest wall muscle. This placement reduces the chances of visible or palpable implant edges and reduces the risk of capsular contracture. Implants may also be placed more superficially above the muscle in select patients that typically possess more breast tissue.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Bruising and swelling are normal following breast augmentation surgery. For several weeks post-surgery, you will need to wear a sports bra to provide support. You will likely be able to return to work, provided no heavy lifting is necessary, within a week. Full recovery is achieved within three weeks after surgery. It can take up to three months before breast implants settle into their final position.
