I recommend everyone I work with get a self hosted blog. Why? It's quite simple. Wordpress is in my opinion a far superior option to the others. Plus, you have control. In a hosted environment, you are sort of stuck with the options, features and of course, the very PLATFORM that you are paying for, which can be limiting. Also - the domain you would typically be using is one that is owned by, or routed through the hosting provider, which means that if you GROW big, you are again, kind of stuck to having to stay with that particular company. The best move is simply pay the 9 dollars for your own domain, install Wordpress on your OWN server, and come and go as you please!
