Putting the Samsung Galaxy or the iPhone 4 on Your Christmas List?

With Christmas just around the corner, time is running out to decide on which mobile phone to put on your wish-list to Santa this year.

With so many smartphones on the market to choose from, it can be difficult to make up your mind on which will serve your needs the best and ensure that you have a very happy new year with your new handset.

Two of the frontrunners for the public's smartphone affections are the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S. On the surface, Apple's latest handset and the Korean manufacturer's device can appear to be pretty similar gadgets that do many similar things. Scratch beneath the surface, however, and there are a number of differences which you could inform your choice.

What's the iPhone 4 got going for it?

In many people's eyes, the iPhone is the gold standard in smartphones, offering tonnes of useful features and performance alongside great usability. The iPhone 4 continues in this tradition, allowing users to make video calls and take crisp, sharp pictures. The App Store is also a big advantage for the iPhone, allowing users to easily and simply download the widgets that make life a little easier or simply a bit more fun.

Why go for the Samsung Galaxy S?

Few smartphones come close to beating the iPhone in terms of features, but the Samsung Galaxy S at least has a good stab at matching it in some areas. Its large, high-resolution screen and 5-megapixel camera are impressive, but it's the usability and organisation of the Android operating system that makes the Galaxy S a real contender. Where the Samsung Galaxy can fall down a little is with its video recording there's no anti-shake feature or flash, meaning it could struggle in low light conditions.

Anything else to consider?

Of course, when you're comparing smartphones, design, features and usability aren't the only aspects you'll want to look at. For many people, price is a big consideration and, in this area alone, the Galaxy more than beats its rival. If you've got more on your Christmas list than a mobile phone, you may decide that opting for Samsung's handset is the most cost-effective thing to do, rather than putting all your eggs in Apple's basket. On the other hand, for many people Christmas is a time to indulge themselves and going for what many consider to be the best smartphone on the block, the iPhone 4, could be seen as a very worthwhile investment.
