Life cover or life insurance cover is not the easiest subjects to navigate. This is because of all the different types of policies available and all the different terminology you need to be sure of before you buy a policy. However life cover is certainly needed because unlike other types of insurance which covers an event which may never happen, we all know that sooner or later we are going to die or get ill. Nobody likes to think about it, although passing away is as natural as breathing and will come to all of us. Now the question is are you prepared? Now of course you won't need money when you pass over to the other side- as a manner of speaking- but what about the people you have left behind?
Besides the financial implications of burial costs, or the hospital costs if you need to be hospitalised, there is also the question of whether or not your family will be able to sustain themselves financially without your income.
Are you the sole bread winner in your family? Or do you and your partner share the financial responsibilities of your living expenses; food, mortgage, travelling expenses and if you have children- their expenses? Without your income will the ones you leave behind be able to cope on their own with all the bills?
Now a comedian would probably respond, ' Cope? They should consider themselves lucky they are still alive!' but we all know that it is the ones left behind who have to suffer the most. The grief of their loss, the planning of a funeral and all the costs, they will be left to cover.
You can make sure that they do not need to face this reality by paying a premium every month so that those around you do not need to worry about the financial burden coupled with their loss. This money can also be used in the case of illness, or you can choose to cash it in for whichever reasons you may see fit.
There are a myriad of life insurance policies out there, but they will fall under two main sections, namely:
Term life insurance, is a policy which is taken over a period of time, which is called a term. This term can be anywhere between 10-40 years and can be renewed after the period has ended. Many young people choose this option because the premiums are lower than in the case of whole life insurance. The down side being that, if nothing happens to you within that term you could lose all your money paid in premiums.
Whole life cover on the other hand is as its names suggests; cover that lasts your whole life. Whole life cover is different to term cover in that, you pay a premium for all your life, and this premium never changes throughout the duration of you cover. Whole life cover also allows you the added benefit of being able to cash in your life cover, when you see fit, which can be perfect for a retirement fund.
Life insurance is really that safety net that could help you either while you are still on this earth or it could help your loved ones in the event of your death. Have peace of mind knowing that your family is financially secure if anything should happen to you.
