subject: How to Avoid Being Cheated When Buying a New Piano [print this page] How to Avoid Being Cheated When Buying a New Piano
You are at a piano dealership and faced with a bewildering array of new and used pianos. The prices don't seem to make a lot of sense. Some look worse, but cost more. Some look great but cost less. You're not sure if your being told the truth.
First, we'll start with the lies piano sellers tell....
This piano is better because of some new technology and/or patent.
Nonsense! Steinway, the maker of the most expensive pianos in the world, hasn't changed their "technology" at all in 100 years. Their shop is like a living museum filled with human and tool fossils. Worse yet, many of these new technologies are completely unproven over time and may lead to premature failures in the piano. Lastly, these new technologies may make the piano non-standard, making the instrument difficult to work on when it eventually breaks down.
Mysterious origins (lies of omission)
Chinese manufacturers try to hide their reputation for shoddy pianos under the guise of a western sounding name. Demand to know the exact location where the piano was manufactured. Also, just because it was designed by some important sounding German or Italian company or person doesn't mean they built the piano. A design does not a piano make. Some Chinese manufacturers do build pianos of moderate quality, and continue to improve their standards.
It's a super sale
If you can sell a brand new piano dirt cheap it's likely dirt quality. Sometimes, providing you're well informed, you can get a bargain on a used piano, but if a dealer is selling you a brand new cheap piano it's likely a lemon.
A used piano is okay, but this new one is better.
Yes there are many used pianos that are worthless, but there are also many fine old pianos of exceptional quality. And, these pianos often hold their value much longer.
Many piano dealers who sell new instruments keep one or two overpriced older pianos in poor condition with inflated price-tags to keep people interested in the newer pianos.
This is comparable to.....
This is comparable to a Yamaha.... This is comparable to a similar Steinway. Sorry there is no comparison. It's like comparing a Ford Pinto to a BMW, yes both have four wheels, but that's where the comparison ends. Quality costs.
Second, some tips to buy the right piano at the right price
Call ahead and find out what brands they sell beforehand.
Do your research about these brands before you go. (Very poor piano manufacturers often have extremely simple one or two page websites with subpar English and very little information about their product)
Take a local tuner or piano teacher with you to purchase a piano
Pay a piano technician to shop with you. Or, at least ask which shops to avoid.
An accomplished player/teacher will have a better ear for discerning a quality instrument.
My name is Cody Handlin, and I'm the owner of Brazos Piano. I've been working with antique pianos since attending my first piano technicians guild meetings when I was just a teenager. At 16, with my own money, I attempted to restore my first instrument, a 100 year old upright piano.
From those early pianistic adventures to today, nearly two decades later, the piano still holds my fascination. I still marvel at its mechanical and aesthetic beauty, hundreds of parts hewn in wood, bone, and metal all working in harmony to produce music of
