I remember a particularly difficult time in my marketing career when I just couldn't make a sale. It seemed like everyone around me was making huge profits in their businesses and I was the only one who was struggling. I didn't know what I was doing wrong, but I knew what I was doing wasn't right.
Then a friend suggested that I take on a mentor, someone who can take an objective view of your situation and give you sound advice. I was skeptical at first since I couldn't understand how someone I didn't know so well can help me with my problems. But I gave it a chance.
Believe me; I'm so glad I did.
Having a mentor isn't unusual especially in the business world. All the greats have mentors or are mentors themselves. I approached a man whose business I had admired for years to be my mentor. I was very hesitant and afraid that he would say no to my request but I forged on anyway. He accepted the role and I benefited from his many years of experience in the trade. I couldn't believe I didn't do this sooner!
I learned that self confidence is an integral part of being a marketer and I discovered new ways to boosting my own. He guided me through different situations and circumstances that I would face in my career and how to handle it.
Having a mentor is a great way to improve, not only your business or career, but your life as well. How? Well, when your business starts making loads of money, wouldn't that improve your life too? I know it did mine.
Most mentors love to give back to people. They want to share their knowledge and experience to people who are hungry for it. However, before you ask someone to be your mentor, make sure they know their stuff. Ask his or her other students if they are indeed the real thing. Also, make sure you are comfortable with them and that they are invested in your success as well.
But remember that you're the only one who is responsible for taking charge of your career and life. Having a mentor is only one part of the equation. Without follow through and the willpower to succeed, you won't see the results you want. So do the right thing now and go find a mentor that will guide you to success and a better life!
