A Sedan Is The Perfect Family Vehicle

What did you base the purchase of your first car on? Was your very first car an extremely pricey, extremely high end sports model or something much more basic? For most people purchasing our first set of wheels wasn't based on the type of car, the colour of the motor vehicle or on the super cool add-ons incorporated with the car. No, we most likely made the purchase mostly determined by the asking price of the car.

Many of us purchased our first vehicles when we were fresh out of school and on our way to technicon or varsity. Regardless of the type and colour of the motor vehicle, as long as it had 4 tyres and a steering wheel we were so happy with this extremely important buy!As we age, certain factors will impact our car purchases. Those that have active outdoorsy lifestyles may need to spend money on something more sensible such as a 4x4 or other utility car. A sporty two door coupe may need to make way for a 4 door sedan or similar family car. And the successful business person who spends hours traveling every week will be better served by a luxury motor vehicle with power-steering, air-conditioning and cruise-control.

A sedan is the most popular family car. This type of car can be divided in three individual compartments - the engine, the passenger compartment and the cargo area. The passenger compartment will consist of at least 2 rows of car seats which could accommodate no less than 4 people.

If people hear the term family car, they assume that the vehicle involved has 4 doors and a cargo area at the back. This might be the most widely used sedan configuration, but these vehicles are offered also in two door versions and a number of sedans even have the cargo area in the front and the engine towards the rear of the car! There are in reality so many different varieties of sedans out there, that it can split into the subsequent classes: notchback sedans, fastback sedans, two-door sedans (also known as a coupe), hardtop sedans and hatchback sedans.

Last but not least are the chauffeured sedans, popularly known as limousines. Limousines can accommodate up to 20 passengers, depending on the size and configuration of the vehicle. These vehicles are naturally not purchased for their big cargo areas, but rather for the luxury of being able to transport a group of people to a wedding or other important function. However the typical sedan configuration still is applicable: engine, passenger and cargo.

There are various stories and ideas on where the expression sedan arises from. Some think it's from a southern Italian dialect from the term "sedia" meaning chair. Other people believe that the term sedan is based on the root "sed" from the Latin word "sella" meaning a carried chair. No matter where the word comes from, sedans are extremely popular vehicles and incredibly practical - especially for families with youngsters who need enough chairs and the benefit of a big enough cargo area!
