When I began as a customer service representative, I had the basic training every marketer had but I felt like it wasn't enough. I was struggling with my calls and the feedback I was getting from my superiors wasn't good. I didn't know what I was doing wrong! I was going through the motions of what I learned in my training but it just wasn't working.
I really felt like giving up. I began to rethink whether marketing was for me. Maybe I wasn't talented enough for it. Maybe I didn't have the right motivation. I was jealous of my co-workers' successes. I could see they were making tons in commissions and here I was struggling to make even one sale!
I decided to be proactive and seek help for my career. At first I looked up marketing specialists in the hope that they could tell me what I was doing wrong but I realized that all they really wanted was my hard-earned money! Then I stumbled upon a real marketing coach, one that specialized in helping people overcome their mental roadblocks.
Let me tell you, within a few weeks I began improving my numbers. I was making more calls, creating more opportunities and of course, making more sales. I was doing so well that I quit the company and started up my own!
When looking for the right coach, you need to know a few things like:
1. Do they really care about you?
If you feel like you're not getting a caring vibe from your coach then leave. You can't waste your time with a coach that's not invested in your success. Sad to say, there are a lot of scam artists out there looking a fast buck by posing as a coach. Make sure they make the time to see or talk to you one on one. As a coach they need to make you feel like you are a priority to them.
2. Are they professional?
Check out his or her credentials before you commit. Make sure they are certified to be a coach and look up their clients and history. Don't be afraid to ask them about their previous and current clients.
3. What's their teaching style and are you comfortable with it?
If you're more into a hands-on approach you need a coach that you can contact on a weekly or even daily basis. If you prefer just listening to tapes or reading their material then there are coaches or programs available like that. It needs to be a method that you can learn from easily so that you'll get the most out of your coaching.
At the end of the day, this is your career and your life on the line. So make a decision to change it for the better!
