How Do you Get to Carnegie Hall? Practice Guitar!

Do I HAVE to Practice Again?

When you first begin to learn how to play guitar, like many things, it is easy to be very involved and excited about it. Unfortunately, once the "grind" sets in, it is sometimes hard to keep the interest, and it becomes harder and harder to practice. The result? The guitar gets used less and less, and soon it never comes out of the closet. That doesn't have to happen! There are ways to make sure that you are always motivated to practice, because without practice, you will never really learn.

The Chain Reaction of Practicing

It's been said over and over, but practice really DOES make perfect. It is when you practice that you really learn to apply the skills you are being taught. The more you are able to apply those skills, the better you will get. The better you get, the more fun you will have playing. The more fun you have, the more motivated you will be to continue practicing, and so on. Because of the learning curve, it is sometimes hard at first because you may not see progress as quickly as you would like. However, if you keep going, you will break through that curve, and sooner than you thought you will playing better than you ever imagined! Don't let the early challenges stop you, because you will see it really is worth it in the end.

It Doens't Take That Long

You really need to set aside a certain amount of time every day to practice. No less than 10 or 15 minutes per day, preferably more. That amount of time is short enough that you won't feel overwhelmed or intimidated by putting it into your daily schedule. You should be able to spend 10 or 15 minutes doing something you love and want to do. Additionally, that is enough time to really get in some valuable and useful practice. Certainly, if you can spend more time than that practicing, you should do so. If you do it this way, it will become an important part of your daily routine, and you will find yourself more motivated to continue with the routine.

Staying Motivated Through Learning

The right guitar course can also help keep you motivated to continue practicing. If a course is interactive, and presents the lessons in different formats from day to day, you will find that it keeps your interest better, and therefore will keep you motivated as well. It's easy to get bored if you are doing the same type of lesson over and over. When you are interested by a variety of teaching methods, you won't get bored and you'll be eager to consistently learn to play better. Some courses allow you to watch videos, play along with audio recordings, and also use interactive games and exercises to help you learn. Learning this way, with a variety of methods, will allow the skills to really sink in enabling you to learn a lot more quickly.

Practice Leads to the Real Fun

When practicing, it is important to make sure that you are doing things correctly. That is when you perfect your technique and skills. There is no need to rush things. Practicing is so important because it's when you practice, that you really focus on the technical aspects of playing guitar. When you're just playing or jamming, you're not focused on technique as much - nor should you be. That's why you spend all that time practicing - to have fun when playing!
