My Autism Support - Causes Of Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. So, what causes autism?

Well, there is no known cause of autism. However, it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the brain structure. Using a brain scan, it was found out that there are differences in the shape and structure of the brain in children with autism compared to neuro-typical children. This may be caused by brain injury, developmental aphasia, deficits in the reticular activating system, seizures, and structural cerebellar changes.

Another factor that was widely identified is genetics. The likelihood of a genetic link to autism spectrum disorders is pretty obvious. Even before autism was established as a diagnosable condition with the release of the DSM in 1952, some family have already had a strong history of autism and autistic-like behaviors. According to studies, children who are suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD have a genetic variation on the 16th chromosome. This variation had not been identified in either of the child's parent's DNA, which leads researchers to believe that genetic anomaly may indeed be the cause of some cases of autism.

On the other hand, many believe that environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of autism. Vaccines, immunological ties, and viral causes are just a few examples. Other examples include exposure to toxins, pesticides, flame retardants, pre- and postnatal viruses, excessive ultrasounds during pregnancy, and even electronic devices. As for vaccines, numerous studies that claim that some individuals do have vaccine-induced autism have been released. One such example is exposure to the mercury preservative found in most childhood vaccines.

Knowing the causes of autism may be useful in trying to prevent the disorder and minimizing the risk factors for autism.
