Despite the fact that he barely resembles the actual Abramoff, Spacey captures the lobbyist's lack of conscience and hubris as few actors can. Some would argue that he's blatantly hunting for Oscar Gold, but it can be equally argued that Abramoff deserves such an over-the-top performance. The only concern is that Spacey seems to identify too much with a man who caused untold misery to thousands and got less than half-a-decade in prison; the real Abramoff might find this portrayal flattering as opposed to the sharp lesson it's supposed to be.
Barry Pepper does sterling work as Michael Scanlon, showing a guy who feels that if he talks fast enough, he can skate over the thin ice of his lies. Jon Lovitz showcases his dramatic chops as Adam Kidan, a lawyer who's not nearly as smart as he believes while Graham Greene plays yet another wise old Indian role.
As the 2nd Decade of Greed spirals into another Great Depression, it's clear that we need more cautionary tales about what happens when the chase for the Almighty Dollar spins out of control. Casino Jack aims to be such a tale, but it seems like it endorses of Abramoff's high-flying lifestyle, not indicting it.
At a time when we're learning that white collar crime is equally as devastating as any other kind of criminal act, Casino Jack fails to fully show the misery that Abramoff's actions engendered. On the other hand, it is a well-executed portrait of a moral vacuum and that's why it gets a 3/5.
