Let's get to the performances: I've seen MANY MANY movies in my lifetime and I have never seen an onscreen couple display as little chemistry as that between Witherspoon and Wilson. Not only does she look revolted every time he reaches out to her as required in the trope-filled screenplay, but the poor guy looks so frustrated by their embarrassingly nonexistent combustion, he overacts and overenunciates each and everyone of his lines, thinking perhaps sparks might fly from the embers of disgust and disdain if he exaggerates every gesture, every nuance. It's a sadly inept performance from a skilled comic actor who thankfully has been better in other roles (and will be better again).
As Rudd's perhaps double-dealing father, Nicholson is horrible. It's admirable that Brooks can count on him when he needs to cast an older, curmudgeonly fellow in a film, but loyalty can only take you so far. Nicholson really tries hard to inject some life, some comic vibrancy into his flat lines but even he can only do so much with a DOA film.
Only Rudd rises above the general muck. He's so endearing that when he has to spout the most inane banalities, he does so with a whimsical playfulness twinkling from his vulnerable eyes. Unlike the others, Rudd's character is the best developed but considering how wretchedly skimpy the other characters are in this movie, that's not a dazzling feat.Owen Wilson also comes up with a memorable piece of acting in this movie and the eccentric character traits he carries out make everyone to have nice surprising feeling empowering them. Jack Nicholson too fulfills his duty by starring in a prominent role and his involvement in the movie makes it to sound more interesting.
