Here is a quick beginner's tutorial on how to use cPanel to manage your web hosting account. Obviously, it will not cover every single thing that Cpanel can do, since it is quite complex. In fact, it is so complex that many people are afraid to even use it. So, if you are wondering about the term cPanel (control panel), it is a graphical website management tool.
If you have not used it before, it sure is quite a scary thing to try. But, for the technical minded, it usually is picked up fairly easy. For all those non-technical people, the thing to do is to stick to the most basic features to avoid confusion. It is helpful for the internet marketer to know their way around cPanel to grow their business a lot quicker.
So many things can be done with cPanel, like add a domain to your hosting account. Just log into cPanel, click "Addon Domains." And where it says "New Domain Name," enter your domain name with the format yourddomainname.com.
Then add the name of the subdirectory and username you want to use as your FTP login. FTP by the way, is short for File Transfer Protocol. This will be the directory where your website is stored on the server, and also your FTP username. Use something easy to remember, but not "yourdomainname."
Avoid of course, making it easy for hackers to find out your username, so choose carefully. Then simply enter the password you wish to use for FTP and click the button that says "Add Domain!" Now you'll be able to log in to the FTP account using the username and password you just set up.
Be aware that the domain name won't show up on the internet until you change the domain account at your registrar to point to the correct name servers. You'll have to do that by logging in wherever you purchased the domain and finding the name server section for that domain.
You then set up a MySQL database. By the way, SQL statements are used to perform tasks such as update data on a database, or retrieve data from a database and SQL stands for Structured Query Language. So, within Cpanel, click on the button that reads "MySQL Database." Enter the name of the database you want to create. Then click on the button that reads, "Add Db."
The database will then be created and then you set up your username and password. You will be taken to the page where you can do this, so enter your username and password in the required fields, and submit it. Never, of course, use the same username as the one for the database name. Or you'll make it easier for hackers to get into your database.
Now you want to make sure to add the user to the database. So many people forget to do this, and then they wonder why their scripts don't work. You MUST add the user to the database. Use the dropdown boxes to select the username, then the database name. Tick the box to add all privileges for the user. Then click the button that says, "Add User to Db."
The time is now for you to set up an email address for your domain. To do this, click "Mail". Then click the small link at the bottom that says, "Add Account". Enter the name you wish to use, and then use the dropdown menu to select the domain you wish that email address to be set up for.
So if your email addresses peterdoe@yourdomainname.com, enter peterdoe in the name area, and select the proper domain. Next, enter a password that's hard to guess, but make sure you write it down.
Leave the quota blank if you want the amount of space the email can take up to be limited only by your web space. That is it!. Your new email is ready to use. As you get comfortable with one feature of cPanel, see what else it has to offer, because remember what I have said in the first paragraph about the complexity of cPanel. There are so many more things you can do with it.
