subject: Thank You Letter - To An Icon Of Hope, Manny Pacquiao [print this page]

There is no denying that Manny Pacquiao serves as a wonderful beacon of hope and inspiration for the Filipino people. This is why I feel compelled to extend my gratitude to him through this letter to show my appreciation.

Dear Manny,

Im sure you have a lot of fans and an equally large amount of fan mail. Im sure you hear everyday about how you are continuing to inspire young athletes and even regular individuals to strive and work hard to achieve their dreams. Im also quite certain that many people have said thanks to you for serving as their inspiration. But Im sure another thank you letter for you and what you do wont hurt.

Id like to give you my thanks, first and foremost, for somewhat improving the social situation in our country, the Philippines, by doing what you do. You uplift the Filipino spirit every time you win a fight. You bring out our fellow countrymens sense of nationalism when you wave our flag high at the announcement of your victory. You figuratively put our country back on the world map with every title you have won, making other nations aware that we Filipinos, despite what effect our history has had on our peoples reputation, are worthy of being recognized in the international scene.

I also want to send this thank you letter because you have never denied your cultural heritage and roots. You have always stated loudly and proudly the country where youre from, never showing or feeling shame that you belong to a people who have been openly and constantly criticized for being inferior in terms of their nations development. Individuals like you remind us the importance of loving our country of origin; loving it enough to fight battles in its honor and striving so that the definition of what a Filipino is can be elevated to something more.

And to top that all off, your demeanor and the attitude you display during fights has been remarkable. You embody the ideal of sportsmanship in a time where respect to a fellow colleague, let alone an opponent, is rarely given freely. You have served as a reminder that in winning, humility and courtesy have to be exhibited first. You have proven that chivalry and the values that accompany it are not dead.

This thank you letter is for you Manny, for giving hope to the Filipino people in the midst of political bickering, ideological clashes, natural disasters, and social uncertainty. You are the modern day hero that many of us need.

I wish you continued success in all your endeavors.

Sincerely,

Raffy Chan
