Normally Tel Aviv, Israel is a city to be enjoyed out of doors. On the hot sunny days it is great to go to the beach, park, or sit in one of the many open-air cafes. Recently however, winter has kicked in. It is so windy and rainy that it is hard to even get out the door in the morning.
Here are a few suggestions of rainy day activities:
Sip Hot Apple Cider in a Cozy Caf
Most Tel Aviv restaurants offer hot apple cider (with or without wine) all year long. It normally comes piping hot with cubes of cut up apples and a whole cinnamon stick. Apple cider is a wonderful alternative to coffee or hot chocolate and will warm you to the core. Some good places for cider are Cafe Amelia (Dizengoff 88) and Bialik Cafe ( Bialik 2).
Browse a Secondhand Bookstore
A great way to spend a rainy afternoon is exploring one of Tel Aviv's numerous bookstores. The chain store Steimatzky has a wide variety of books in English and a lot of the books are buy one get one free. If you are looking for a more unique selection go to one of the many used book stores in the city. Two of the these funky used book stores are Book Junky (Dizengoff 167) and Bibliophile (Allenby 87). They are each overflowing with reading materials and you can spend hours pouring through their hodgepodge books in many languages including English.
Practice some Hot Yoga
Bikram Yoga (or Hot Yoga) is perfect for a cold rainy day. This one of a kind yoga is practiced in a sauna-like hot, dry room in order to warm up the muscles for more flexibility. The strenuous poses combined with the heat of the room get you working up a great sweat so when you emerge from the classroom you are refreshed and rejuvinated. In Tel Aviv, there are two Bikram studios, one in Dizengoff Center inside Gymmy and at Carlebach 14.
Going to the movies is a classic rainy day activity and works well in Tel Aviv as well. The Lev Theater is located on the top floor of Dizengoff Center and offers new foreign and domestic releases. Most of the English language movies are subtitled so those of you who don't have working Hebrew (like me) are in luck.
