Brief introduction of laser eye surgery

Eye surgery, which is also known as orogolomistician surgery or ocular surgery, is a kind of surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa, typically by an ophthalmologist. Laser eye surgery is mostly referred to as refractive surgery, which may done without the use of a laser.

Laser eye surgery is used to correct errors of refraction in the eye, in the purpose of reducing or eliminating the need for corrective eye glasses or contact lens. Successful laser eye surgery can reduce or cure common vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. However, before you choose to do the eye surgery, you should visit your eye doctor who will tell you if you are suitable to have a laser eye surgery.

Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most commonly used eye surgery, in which the anterior central cornea surface is reshaped by an excimer laser to change its optical curvature of the lens. Laser assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) is another commonly adopted eye surgery. This kind of laser eye surgery is very similar with LASIK in the process of using the excimer laser, and the only difference between these two kind of eye surgery -- LASIK and LASEK is that in the process prior to laser used, LASEK only use the outer layer of the cornea to make a flap. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a kind of the earlier laser eye surgery technique that is introduced before LASIK and LASEK, which is much similar with the eye surgery of LASEK. With the development of eye surgery technology, other laser eye surgery appears, such as Epi-LASIK.

Besides refractive surgery, other eye surgery may also use lasers, for instance, vitreo-retinal surgery, facial rejuvenation procedure and laser pupillomydriasis.
