I get this question almost every day. What is the best workout for your abs? The answer is very surprising; they are always expecting some sort of crunch variation or me to say sit-ups. The answer that I give them is always, the best abs exercise is no ab exercise at all. They always look a bit puzzled and they sometimes don't think that I know what I am talking about.
That is however the answer. The best ab exercise is no ab exercise at all. The key to working your abs is a mixture of nutrition and doing compound multi joint exercises.
In this article I want to focus not so much on the nutrition aspect of thing but more on the exercise side of things. This is not because the nutrition is not important, in fact if you were to give a percentage to what is more important, I personally believe it would be 60% nutrition 40% exercise. The reason I want to focus on the exercise side of things is because so many people are doing this wrong, and the worst part is they think they are doing things right. I mean with nutrition if you are eating wrong you know it, you can't expect to eat burger from a fast food joint and have a six pack, but you do often expect to do sit-ups and get a 6 pack and that is just not the case.
The key lies in doing compound multi joint exercises. These are the kind of exercises that work more than one specific muscle group at a time, and work them well.
You have to get a good base of calorie burning muscle. These compound movement exercises not only work the muscle groups well but also they really burn calories both when you are doing them and long after you are done.
So what is the best ab exercise, well that really depends. But here is a great super set that I often use to get my rock hard abs.
1)Barbell Squats
2)Pushup Dumbbell Rows
3)Floor Mountain Climbers
Do these ne after another in a super set form.
Barbell squats are by far the best single calorie burning muscle building exercise that there is. There are so many different variations of them it's not even funny. For an extra challenge try doing front barbell squats.
Front barbell squats work the core a lot more than the normal squats, you may have to lower the weight a bit, but it's worth it in the long run.
Pushup dumbbell rows are a pushup combined with a row. They are really well executed with kettleballs. Start with a low weight, and work your way up. No need to be a hero out of the box. These will burn really good!
Then jump down to floor mountain climbers. By this time you will be tired, so it is good to end off with something that doesn't include weight. Try an interval of about thirty seconds to start, if you are really good you may go up to a minute. Check out www.internethealthandfitnessdatabase.com for more details.
This will certainly give you a rock solid workout, and will be far better than doing silly sit-ups and crunches for your abs. Get great abs today, and stop wasting your time with those silly sit-ups and crunches.
