As the first in our new series of articles for the Good Samaritan Networking Group I would like to discuss what I believe to be one of the most effective online tools for job hunting LinkedIn. If you have not already, I strongly suggest that you register for a free account and complete your online profile. Then connect with people you have worked with or otherwise known well. This will get you started forming a virtual network that can be very helpful:
Network into your target companies If there are specific companies you are trying to get into, go to the Advanced Search feature and enter the name of a company. The results will show you how you are connected through your contacts to someone in that company. Scan the list to see who might be the most influential people you can get to, and request an Introduction through your contact.
Use key terms in your profile Recruiters are increasingly using LinkedIn to search for candidates that match their specifications for openings. Be sure your profile includes current industry terms reflecting your experience.
Search the contact lists of your direct connections You never know who might be valuable there request an introduction.
Import email addresses You can import email addresses from other sources such as Yahoo or Gmail, and have LinkedIn request connections for you. Increasing the size and reach of your network increases its value to you.
Join relevant groups Join groups from schools you attended or companies you've worked for or groups such as Job-Hunt Help or the Good Samaritan Networking Group! (yes, the GSNG has groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Google)
