The brand HTC are currently regarded as the leading smartphone manufacturers, with there models not only laden with features but also boasting great build quality and stylish looks. The new Desire Z is the latest model, but rather than following the trend towards 4" screens, they have stuck with a 3.7" display, but teamed it with a physical keypad.
Many phones that sport a Qwerty keypad tend to lack a little it terms of robustness, thus it is pleasing that the Desire Z feels as well made as all of the brands previous efforts. Despite weighing in at a rather hefty 180 grammes, it is thanks to this bulk that when in the palm of your hand, the unit feels well constructed and typically high end. One material that is used frequently in the phones construction is brushed aluminium, further enhancing the look and feel of the phone. Looking around the phone you will find the usual array of ports, with a micro USB and a 3.5 mm headphone socket amongst these connections. On the front of the handset beneath the screen the four familiar Android keys can be found. The display itself is one of the most impressive aspects of this model. At 3.7" , the screen is not one of the largest, nor does it boast AMOLED technology. However it is the best example of LCD technology you will find. Colour reproduction is superb and up to 16 million colours can be displayed, which along with the extremely high 480 x 800 resolution results in one of the best image qualities currently available. The touch panel is capacitive, meaning great responsiveness and also meaning features such as pinch and zoom work as well as you would expect.
The real feather in the cap of the HTC Desire Z is the physical keyboard that it sports, something that has rarely been successful on any Android handset. HTC have in this instance opted away from the more commonly used slider design in favour of a hinged mechanism. The advantage of such a system is that it allows plenty of clearance between the bottom of the screen and the keypad. The layout of the device comprises of four individual rows, and all of the buttons are well spaced, so typing your message is an easy task. If you want to save a little time, you can opt to use the on screen keypad which also prove incredibly responsive. The Desire Z once again employs the Sense user interface which has undergone some useful changes, with this handset being one of the first to showcase them. Much of these changes are based around a "Cloud" system, which involves storage of files at a centrally accessible location. This allows you to back up contacts, call history etc as well as remotely lock your phone if it is lost, or even delete its contents. The HTC Desire Z will appeal to both new smartphone users as well as existing users looking for an upgrade. This is thanks to high specification and a really stylish design.
