subject: Nuclear Sludge Chew Bars Recalled Over Lead Concerns [print this page]

The recall was initiated after a recent test by the California Department of Public Health indicted that lot number 8288A of cherry-flavored chewy treats contained 0.24 parts per million of lead which is twice the permissible FDA limit of 0.1 parts per million.

Though the other two flavors of Nuclear Sludge Chew Bars, the blue raspberry and sour apple, were not tested, the company decided to pull out all the flavors just in case they are also contaminated.

According to Candy Dynamics Vice President Laura King, since the candy bars are imported by company from Pakistan, the cause of lead is not clear.

High lead content can cause potential health issues like brain damage, hearing problems, stunted growth and reproductive problems in adults.

That potentially could cause health problems, particularly for infants, small children, and pregnant women, the FDA said in a statement.

Products affected by recall

The products affected by the recall are Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge Cherry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81430 6), Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge Sour Apple Chew Bar (UPC 0 10684 81410 7), and Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge Blue Raspberry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81420 7).

Though the other two flavors of Nuclear Sludge Chew Bars, the blue raspberry and sour apple, were not tested, the company decided to pull out all the flavors just in case they are also contaminated.

The candy is sold in .7 oz packages nationwide at convenience stores, retail locations and through mail order and online on sites including Amazon.com.

However, other Toxic Waste candies are not involved in the recall and are apparently safe for consumption.

Precautionary measure

Though no one has reported any adverse events or illness from eating the tainted candy, as a precautionary measure the company has issued a recall of all the Nuclear Sludge candy bars that have been distributed from the products introduction in 2007 through January 2011.

A California Public health department spokesperson, Mike Sicilia, stated, "If you had one piece of this, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you're pregnant, I would talk to your physician."

The company is warning consumers to stop eating the bars is also urging the public to return the affected products to the place of purchase. The bars can be returned for a complete refund.

For consumer queries, the company wants consumers to call Eileen ONeal at 317-228-5012 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm EST) for information on recall.
