The requirement of the keyword is, that it is related, rather a long tail one. This will guarantee that the visitors are warm, i.e. interested about the topic.

Another requirement is, that the small online business keyword has a moderate competition on the search engine result pages, i.e. that it has realistic chances to climb to the first page or to the top three search results. When Google ranks the results according to the authority links, which point to the page, it is easy to look at how many links the present first page pages have.

The first thing is to look at your business plan, What is the business idea, why are you online? What benefits do you produce and to whom? When you have used the keyword for some time, it is the time to start the follow up and to follow, how these keywords will work on the result pages. This is interesting and useful, because you will see, that despite of the careful keyword research, some keywords do not bring the wished results, but some will bring. The decision must be made, which keywords to support and which you will leave.

There are two reasons. First, the surfers, who use the long tail keywords know better, what they are looking for. This means, that the landing page content meets their requirement and this means a better conversion rate. Usually the long tail keywords are not so competed and this means better chances to rank high and to keep the rankings.

5. You Need A Lot Of Keywords.

But first you need a good keyword tool, which will give also the competition figures. Of course it is possible to make the keyword research manually and to check the number of links site by site, but this will take time. The online business needs a lot of keywords and several keyword families, i.e. keyword groups, which uses different core search term.
