subject: Fabulous Mothers Day Presents: Because She's Worth It [print this page]

Poor old mum spends most of the year as an unrecognised general dogsbody, cooking, cleaning and tidying up for her family. Occasionally she gets let out for good behaviour, prompting the kids to gasp in amazement that their downtrodden mum can brush up so well. Does this sound familiar? If so, perhaps it is time to give mum a treat on Mothers Day and show her how important she is.

The origins of Mothers Day go back to Greek and Roman times, where the ancient cultures celebrated a spring festival dedicated to maternal goddesses. Early Christians paid tribute to the Virgin Mary on the fourth Sunday of Lent and in England the celebrations began to include all mothers, when children would bring gifts and flowers for their own mothers following the Church service in honour of the Virgin Mary. Employers would allow children in domestic service or working as apprentices to visit their mothers on this fourth Sunday of Lent and the day became known as Mothering Sunday. However, the practice disappeared during the Industrial Revolution as working practices changed and it is only in the last 100 years or so that Mothers Day as we now know it has evolved.

The shops are full of cards and gifts in the run up to Mothers Day and it is very easy for busy children or their equally busy dads! to grab the first gift they see. But doesn't mum deserve better? Surely all her selfless work earns her the right to be treated as a maternal goddess for just one day each year?

Breakfast in bed and doing the washing up without complaining will make Mum feel appreciated but if she can see that some thought has gone in to her Mothers Day gift then she really will feel special.

So what should you buy for a maternal goddess on Mothers Day? First of all, avoid the high street. Mum will spot a chain store product a mile off. Instead, seek out Mothers Day presents that are a little different. A personalised gift will always be special because it shows that thought and planning has gone into choosing it and it is unique.

Does mum have a sweet tooth? Can she be found stealing the children's sweets or guiltily sweeping up the cake crumbs? Perhaps she would appreciate a personalised chocolate bar or a personalised retro sweet jar particularly appropriate for a yummy mummy. If she has a weakness for the local takeaway too, then a Chocoholics Pizza could be the perfect gift, however, you may have to treat her particularly well to persuade her to share!

If mum likes to sit down with a cup of tea or coffee, then a personalised mug telling her just how fabulous she is could be the perfect gift, or if she enjoys something a little stronger, then her own personalised bottle of wine or champagne could hit the spot. What better way to celebrate being a fabulous mum?

There are many personalised Mothers Day presents which would be appropriate for younger children to give to their mum. Mothers adore their children (most of the time!) and any mum would appreciate a photo frame filled with pictures of the little angels. There is a wide range of multiple frames available which hold several pictures or you could take it a step further and get her a photo frame clock. She will then be reminded how much her children appreciate her whenever she checks the time, or maybe the Mothers Day breakfast in bed could be presented on a photo frame serving tray to give Mum two gifts at once!

Children are not always good at articulating how much they love and appreciate their mum so why not let the experts do it instead? You will find amongst the array of personalised Mothers Day presents a number of books dedicated to mums featuring poems or quotes and proverbs. The books can be personalised with the child or children's names and the sentiments contained inside should bring a tear to the eye of even the most world weary mum.

Alternatively, you could keep the message simple. A Thanks Mum calendar spells out mum's name on a beautiful picture for each month of the year. Perhaps, with a calendar hanging on the kitchen wall featuring her name on a box of chocolates or across a clear blue sky, mum will feel so fabulous she won't mind doing the washing up after all!
