Pitti Palace is a palace located in Piazza Pitti at number one in the neighborhood of Oltrarno in Florence. Inside are housed several museums of different nature: an art gallery (the Palatine Gallery, with masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, etc..) arranged according to the criterion of eighteenth-century paintings, the monumental apartments, the Gallery of Modern Art ( with the works of macchiaioli) and other specialized museums: the Museo degli Argenti, dedicated to applied art, the Gallery of Costume, the largest museum dedicated to Italian fashion, the Porcelain Museum and the Carriage Museum.
The monumental Boboli Gardens are one of the best examples in the world of Italian gardens. At the time it was built it was the largest Florence's residence and the most opulent. Luca Pitti was rival of the Medici family and wanted a more luxurious home than the one just built by Michelozzo for Cosimo the Elder.The tradition handed down by Giorgio Vasari (but without other evidence) that wants the Pitti were addressed to Filippo Brunelleschi choosing the project put aside by Cosimo de 'Medici for the Palazzo Medici because it was judged too great and likely to envy, preferring the project by Michelozzo. The legend tells that Luca Pitti demanded that the windows of the new building were larger than the main door of Cosimo (in fact on the ground floor there was a balcony) and that the court could hold the entire Palazzo Strozzi. The family resided in the palace since 1469, after the death of Luca Pitti (1472).
