subject: Hotels In Kolkata [print this page]

Being the capital city of West Bengal and the erstwhile capital presidency of British India, Kolkata has its own lineage of imperial pride and heritage. This pride and colonial heritage have also been distilled in the hotels in Kolkata. It is said that the hotels here in this city are invested with the very ethos and the values imbibed by the proud Bengali culture of the city.

I have found the hotels in Kolkata to present excellence at the utility of regular hotels, offering superlative service and features with a personal touch. From the palatial Taj Bengal, the colonial Grand Hotel and the youthful ITC Sonar Bangla to even the most humble establishments, I would return to Kolkata time and again simply for the personalized touch and excellent hospitality.

Hotels in Kolkata are deeply steeped in the local culture, exemplified best by perhaps the Park Hotel on Park Street. Besides being a luxurious premier hotel, it houses Kolkata's oldest rock and jazz music destination called Someplace Else.

Every evening, hundreds of tourists and music aficionados flock over to see excellent live music, while quietly sipping on a beer or two. The ITC Sonar Bangla, near the upcoming commercial hub Rajarhat, presents a completely different, more executive and business-oriented vibe to their hospitality.

Uniquely enough, right in Kolkata, I have found excellent hotels that also cater to the students, or tourists with constricted means. From hotel Blue Eagle at the anglicized stretches of Sudder Street to various cheap lodge-hotels like Hotel Vijayant and Hotel Larica.

For tourists with limited means yet adventure in their hearts, the Kolkata skyline is almost dotted with these affordable, yet easily-accessible solutions. Be it the in-house food festivals, the Bengali-rock events or even the art exhibitions, hotels in Kolkata represent the sentiment and warmth of West Bengal.
