subject: Opc-3 Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory - Getting The Most Out Of Both [print this page]

There is no shortage to the amount and variety of nutritional supplements and vitamins available on the market today. Choosing the correct supplement often boils down to the specific needs of the individual. While it is important that everyone get their daily allowance of necessary isotonic vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin B, a good nutritional supplement should also provide some anti-inflammatory properties as well as the necessary antioxidants for human body to successfully fight off diseases and infections. Many individuals mistakenly believe that antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties are one and the same. While it is true that many supplements contain both, they are not necessarily the same thing.

Antioxidants enable the body's immune system to successfully fight off free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that can wreak havoc in the body and are known to aid in the development of several different types of cancers. Antioxidants can also help a body fight off other common diseases and may even improve a person's ability to recover from an injury. Many supplements, such as grape seed extract or pine bark extract, provide a high level of antioxidants and also have very potent anti-inflammatory properties.

A supplement with anti-inflammatory properties can help a person suffering from chronic or long-term pain and stiffness to more successfully deal with their condition. The swelling and bruising associated with a surgical procedure can also be affected by a supplement that provides some amount of anti-inflammatory relief. Many common painkillers are prescribed because of their anti-inflammatory abilities, and in some cases these might even be able to be replaced by a more natural alternative. It may be oversimplifying, but antioxidants can be thought of as things that prevent illness while anti-inflammatory is more commonly associated with the ability of a particular substance to help an individual recover from an illness or injury.

As stated before, many vitamins and nutritional supplements contain ingredients that are anti-inflammatory and contain a high level of antioxidants. It is important to keep in mind, however, that not all vitamins and nutritional supplements are created equal. Many pills and tablets that are purchased from health food stores contain a large amount of ingredients that, while necessary for the manufacturing process, provide no real benefit to the person consuming them. A better alternative would be to consume these supplements in a liquid form. Vitamins taken in a liquid form are able to be processed and used much more quickly and more efficiently by the human body.
