How To Take Care Of Your Costume Jewelry
How To Take Care Of Your Costume Jewelry

A couple of weeks ago my daughter purchased some costume jewelry. To be honest, it wasn't very expensive but she's young and had saved her own money in order to purchase this. After only a few days we could see there was a lot of deterioration in how her jewelry looked which was very disappointing.

A quick trip back to the jewelry store and they were able to advise us as to what may have caused the problem. You see costume jewelry until not very expensive (depending on what you purchase) needs to be taken care of because it can suffer from problems with abrasives and moisture. This is exactly what happened to my daughter's jewelry.

Because she liked it so much she decided to keep it on all the time and lets be honest many young girls are just saying when they purchase something especially if they have paid for this out of their own money. She had showered a couple of times wearing the jewelry and had also done some cleaning around the home. We found out that lots of household items can have a chemical reaction with the jewelry and because she had used window cleaner, oven cleaner and bleach this was the issue.

The stuff in the store were very good and although they could not replace the jewelry because unbeknownst to me they had informed my daughter of these types of problems before she purchased. They did however offer a nice discount on the other products we buy in the future. Which, I know wants a little bit late for what she had purchased now but was very nice of them to do this.

So it's a lesson for many of us to learn to ensure that you do not wear your jewelry when using any household chemicals that many of us use on a day-to-day basis. Simple things like hairspray can also cause problems to your jewelry so now we make sure that the jewelry is the last thing to go on when you are getting ready to go anywhere.

You should also check with your local jewelry store if they have a new cleaning products that they recommend when purchasing any type of jewelry. It can happen that even some of the chemicals within these products can cause problems so you need to ensure that you purchase the correct one that will not cause any issues whatsoever.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to maybe chat to the staff with in your local jewelry store as they will be able to give you advice on the jewelry you are purchasing. Always ensure that jewelry is the last thing you put on when you are going anywhere because even some cosmetic makeup can have a chemical reaction with the particular jewelry so ensuring this is the last thing to go on and avoid any problems as best as possible. As I have said already if you are in an event simply talking to the stuff in your local jewelry store and they should really be able to give you the best advice possible. You can also do some research on the Internet but this information can be very conflicting as many people have different experiences and many different opinions.
