subject: Hcg Level | Normal Hcg Levels In The Body [print this page]

HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), is a natural hormone found in the body that is produced during pregnancy. Though hcg levels will increase dramatically in pregnant women, hcg is also found in males at very low levels.

What is the Normal HCG Level in the Body?

The normal level of hcg in the body is at or less than 5mlU/ml. If you think you are pregnant and want to test your hcg levels to determine if you are, you should expect to see hcg levels at or above 25mlU/ml. The mlU in this case stands for milli-international units. Thus, hcg levels are measured in milli-international units per milliliter.

How is HCG Used in Weightloss?

A popular diet has developed surrounding this natural hormone lately. HCG drops and hcg shots can be taken to increase the hcg levels in both males and females. The hcg hormone taps into the abnormal fat reserves to provide fuel for both the mother and baby. However, when a woman is not pregnant and increases her hcg level, the same effect happens. Thus, fat is burned quickly from problematic areas that are common amongst overweight individuals such as the buttocks, belly and thighs.

The same effect happens when hcg levels are increased in males. The hormone causes the fat preserves to be converted into energy so that weight loss is targeted to these problem areas.

Are High HCG Levels Problematic?

High hcg levels do not adversely affect both males and females. If you are pregnant, and experience higher than normal hcg levels, it may be an indication that you are having twins. If you are not taking hcg drops or directly putting hcg into your body and are experiencing high hcg levels, there may be a number of different reasons. High levels of hcg may indicate choriocarcinoma of the uterus, ectopic pregnancy, down syndrome in fetus, hydatidiform mole of the uterus, normal pregnancy, or ovarian cancer. You should consult your doctor if an hcg level test is performed and you experience higher than normal hcg levels.
