An Interview with My Trainer
A few months ago I hired a Personal Trainer to help me get on track with establishing a more fit lifestyle. Some questioned why I would get a Trainer since I am already fit and do not have a weight issue. I can understand their confusion, but I know for myself that I want to be toned, sculpted and stronger without causing any injury to my body. Having a Trainer is like having a "body coach" who guides you through exercises, proper form, nutrition and supports you through your journey to not only reach your fitness goals but to maintain a healthier life.
"Anything is possible, stay motivated, be patient, work with a Trainer for a minimum of 1 month and you will see results."
What led you to become a P/T?
I've always been in the field of fitness. I'm amazed with thefact that the U.S has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. I wanted to take an active stance against that. I have alwaystaken care of my own body from early age. I became certifiedand started working for a reputable gym and I also started my own company an at home personal training business. I love doing what Ido and I think that's important!
What's your Mission?
To take what I know to help adults and kids. I think if you teach kids at a young age they will lead a healthier lifestyle.
What's your approach with beginners?
Very simple. Don't do anything advanced, light weights, high reps, just to get the body acclimated to the process of working out. Gradually after the first month increasing the resistance, intensity and the variety of workouts.
What are the top 3 reasons people should seek a Trainer?
Knowledge: People don't usually know the right way to workout
Form: If done incorrectly you can cause minor/major injuries.
Motivation: Many people can workout 1 or 2 weeks and lose motivation, so a Trainer is there to motivate and support you. They will teach you the proper excercises, what do to on which days and the correct order to perform them.
Best Part of your profession?
Helping people lose weight. The look on someone's face when they lost inches off their waist is priceless.
What's biggest challenge?
People who are not committed, want to see results but don't stay focused especially with their diet. They say they are dedicatedbut lack willpower when it comes to eating correctly.
How do you deal with tough clients?
I'm a patient Trainer, I go easy on them I don't completely cut allcarbs or make them do crazy workouts in the beginning. I like to ease them into their personalized workouts and nutrition. For the first month, I only cut 50% off on carb intake and for exercise workouts start with light weights so they are not too sore next day. Every couple of weeks change nutrition and increase intensity of workout. I listen to the clients needs and concerns and make proper changes and adjustments.
How do you maintain a fit lifestyle?
I workout, watch what I eat, continue researching and educating myself with proper dieting, forms of excercises. I play athleticsports such as basketball, which I played professionally overseas.
What are some recommendations for people wanting to start living a healthy Fit Life?
Stay focused. Realize you are responsible for on your own health. Many people don't know thatthe number one killer in America is heart disease. The best way to avoid these risks is through exercise and proper diet. Start doing cardio 3x a week(walking, jog outdoor track, treadmill, elliptical). Weight training helps to increase your metabolism but cardiovascular exercises are more effective in fat loss. Do light weights, consult with a Trainer for proper form. Moderate diet, have carbs earlier in the day. Eat leaner foods such as grilled chicken, fish or turkey. Try to cut off eatingpast 8PM and you will see better results.
What are some tips for selecting a Trainer?
Observe a potential Trainer while he/she is training a client for a few sessions. Are they attentive? Are they knowledgable? Do they offer support outside of training sessions? I keep in touch with most of my clients, give support and help them stay focused on their diet etc. Ask a client currently working with a Trainer.
What are must haves for home gyms?
There are many space saving excercise equipment. Some of the basics are dumbells sets which help target different muscles(chest, shoulders, back), have resistance cables that attachto a door and small bench.
Any words of encouragement for people to start getting fit now?
Anything is possible, stay motivated, be patient, work with a Trainer for a minimum of 1 month and you will see the results. Give it a shot! What do you have to lose? You will gain a healthier body and boost of confidence.
