1990 was the year when the world came to know about a new type of lens which is known as the aspheric lens. Aspheric lenses have a complex front surface which is very different from the regular lenses. The curve in these lenses changes from the centre towards the edge. These lenses have become very popular in today's world. The aspheric lenses meant for farsightedness has its surface gradually flattening towards the edge. While the lenses meant for nearsightedness has its surface gradually steepening towards the edge.
It has been seen that slight vision distortions occur when eyeglass wearers look away from the centre. The use of aspheric lenses helps n reducing such disorders. The principle behind it is that when the eyes travel from the centre the curve in the front changes helping you to see clearly.
The advantages of aspheric lenses are that they are thinner then regular lenses as well as they provide the same benefits as the high index lenses. These lenses were made from conventional plastic but the modern day aspheric lenses are made from high index material. These lenses are also slimmer as they have flatter curves. The aspheric lenses do not come out from the frames and the thinner profile of these lenses helps one to look more attractive. The flat aspheric lenses are positioned much closer to your face and thus helps in better correction of vision. It has been always seen that farsighted lenses tends to enlarge the eyes of the wearer and the nearsighted lenses does the opposite that is it tends to make the yes of the wearer look small. Thus a better positioning of the lenses can reduce these problems. The nearsighted people can take the help of aspheric lenses made of high index material in order to reduce this sort of problems.
Today almost all designs are possible in case of aspheric lenses including bifocals, progressive addition lenses and single vision. But one should be careful about choosing a frame with the aspheric lenses. The frame should not be large with your eyes exactly in the middle of the frame. You can take the help of an optician to choose the right type of frame for you. The aspheric lenses are little more expensive than the regular lenses. But the benefits derived from these lenses are huge enough to shred out that much of money. Since these lenses are placed closer to the face there might be problems of reflection. But with the help of an anti-reflective coating one can ensure a clear vision.
