NEERI-ZAR PORTABLE INSTANT WATER FILTER
Recently I visited CSIR technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I have seen a technology as a lay man to understand about what is " NEERI ZAR Portable Instant Water Filter" which was developed by NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute), Nagpur.
Floods in any country have caused immense loss of life and property. In a flood affected areas, initially people need food, safe drinking water, shelter and healthcare to survive from the catastrophic effects of these floods. Many villages would be simply wiped out and men, women and children would be living under open sky looking for help and support. People will be around the water and not able to drink the water in a pathetic situation. People first need good drinking water, otherwise they have to face many diseases immediately and whole area will be affected with these water borne diseases. The first need of the people is water for drinking and cooking purposes. The relief & rehabilitation will take years to fully rehabilitate affected communities and infrastructure.
We can say that in a critical situation like flood, NEERI ZAR Technology is revolutionary concept that can solve immediate water problem for drinking water and cooking purposes.
Water Filtration may be done in many ways like
1. Sand Filter
2. Activated Carbon Filter
3. Cartridge Filter
4. Ultra Violet
5. Electric Control Panel
6. Booster Pump
But in a situation like flood only sand filter will be possible one. NEERI-ZAR' which was developed by NEERI, Nagpur, is the water purification system suitable for potable water supply particularly under emergency situation with a wide range of flood water quality.
NEERI ZAR is a Disaster management tool for drinking water supply under flood affected situations. This is the most reliable water purification system without use of electric power for water supply particularly under emergency situation with a wide range of flood water quality
This is just a sand filter for removing impurities of water for making water drinkable and cooking purpose. A typical unit, with two 100 L vessels, can serve about 20-30 persons, when operated for 10 hours a day for drinking and cooking purposes. In first vessel, water will be filtered and send filtered water to a second vessel through a tap and second filter will do same thing and send pure water for drinking and cooking purposes. In Assam State of India, people use charcoal (coal after burning wood of any kind) and sand for filtering the water for drinking and cooking purpose. If charcoal is available, that can also be added in the sand for filtration of water to remove impurities in the water.
NEERI ZAR is a boon in a situation like floods and any calamities where water to be purified for drinking and cooking purposes.
