1. Always blot the area and do not scrub. Right after spilling something onto your carpet immediately take a dry white terry cloth and blot up as much of the spill as you can. Just this alone will remove most of the spill many times, preventing it from becoming a more difficult carpet stain to clean.
2. Choose your cleaner correctly; should you use acidic or alkaline based cleaners? If the carpet stain came from an animal such as blood or urine, then use alkaline cleaners. But if it came from a plant like coffee, vegetable juice, wine, etc., then use an acidic cleaner.
3a. If it was an animal Use one tablespoon of clear dishwashing detergent and mix it with a cup of cold water. Spray your cleaner on the stained area and gently rub it with a spoon. Be careful not to scrub it. When you use a spoon you will be less likely to fray your carpet and it allows you to reach deeper into the carpet fibers. Let the cleaner set for 5 minutes. Then rinse the area with cold water and blot dry. Repeat this until you see it is clean.
3b. If the stain is plant based Take an equal mix (50/50) of white vinegar and cold water. Work this mixture into the stained carpet exactly as outlined above.
4a. These cleaning methods will remove most carpet spots and stains. However, if the spot has been sitting too long then you more than likely have a stain. A stain is very different than a spot. The stain has make a home for itself by embedding into the carpet fiber and has actually changed the coloration in doing so. Don't worry though, here are two methods that will remove even the most difficult carpet stain. Spray a fairly liberal amount of peroxide onto the carpet stain. Lay a white terry cloth on top of it. Now get your steam iron and place it on top of the cloth. Wait 30 seconds. Rinse and blot with a dry cloth. Now wait until your carpet cools down, and repeat the process. This method works wonderfully for red dye stains like kool-aid stains on carpet.
