subject: Shelving Wood Or Metal? [print this page]

When decorating your house, wooden storage racks seem like a much more traditional, classy solution to storing your more decorative of possessions. When you think about metal shelving racks, you will most likely think about industrial or commercial monsters with peeling paint and rivet holes the size of your face.

While metal is very much the industrial material of choice, metal units can also be extremely useful in more casual environments too. Chrome lends a very modern look to any room, and chrome storage racks can be an excellent addition to anything from the kitchen to the office. Unlike some wooden products, chrome is easy to clean, practical and very resilient, while being able to support much heavier loads than many wood units might be able to cope with.

Wooden shelving on the other hand is likely to be more suited to areas such as the bedroom. Very rarely will you need to store particularly heavy products here and while metal may fit neatly within the ambience of other rooms, it may well be a little harsh or out of place in your most intimate of living spaces.

The biggest difference between the two will ultimately come down to your own storage requirements and the atmosphere you are trying to capture. The more modern the room, the better metal will work and, likewise, the heavier the items, the more need you will have for metal. However if you would like to recreate a period feel with a faux antique look, or simply emulate that feeling of relaxing in a cottage in the country, then wood will be exactly what you are looking for.

Choosing the right product will be all about balancing the aesthetics with the practicality, the look with stability. Who knows, maybe you could use one of each?
