When I first thought about this I assumed that Cougars' would be hot, fit, intelligent, self-sufficient ladies with high flying careers very Kim Catterall as in Sex in the City. However, I have to report that this is not so. If you think that all cougars are successful, beautiful, independent women then you are sadly mistaken there appears to be a rather varying scale; their one and only common denominator being their attraction for younger men.
True cougars are mostly single women, normally in their 40's to 50's. They are quietly confident and secure in their actions; they will look and come across much younger than their years, often significantly so. They have a passion for life and living it to the full and often revel in their accomplishments. They may not be blonde, and they may not have the most amazing figure, but they have an air about them that demands attention, a naughty twinkle in their eyes with an ability to flirt openly without fear of rejection. They can hunt in groups or singularly and are quick to identify their target and once decided they will happily approach their victim before going in for the kill. They rarely seek long term commitment and make no demands sex without commitment - a winning combination that many young men will find irresistible.
On the other side there a women who have settled down with their counterpart and it's no longer just the likes of Demi Moore, Madonna and Joan Collins who are proud to say they prefer dating younger men. I read one story about a woman who ran away from home with her sons' best friend. The woman was in her late 40's, slightly overweight, not particularly fashionable but she had a real zest for life the young guy was 24 and absolutely gorgeous. When asked what it was that made her so appealing, he said it was her attitude to life she was mature, confident and wise, yet still had a sense of adventure and whole lot of naughtiness! She said it was his lack of expectation and demands that made it work so well. Four years later and the relationship was still going strong
Me, if I'm honest I would have to say that if you can pull a younger model good on you girl', but when Iresearched cougars on the internet, I was quite surprised at the varying degree of opinion some think its quite harmless whilst others think cougars are the devil in disguise and should be burned at the stake! Another surprise was the large number of dating websites available for those women looking for the younger man and vise versa. It certainly didn't take long for the trend to catch on
However, my interpretation was completely turned on its head by one website in particular. It advertised itself as the ultimate dating site for real cougars. A beautiful woman was pictured on the front, hot, sexy and classy my understanding of what a cougar was exactly. Their definition read something like this women in their sexual prime, completely at ease with whom and what they are; beautiful, classy, independent wealthy women with fantastic careers; real head turners. I clicked onto one of the profile descriptions and nearly fell off my seat. There was a picture of a huge pair of breasts. And what a pair they were! I had to click back to the front page to make sure that I hadn't read things wrong no, definitely states, beautiful and classy! This completely turned everything upside down I clicked onto a few more and there, in-between some profile pictures of stunningly beautiful, classy women were more boobs and more naked bodies. I immediately felt really sorry for those women who were genuine cougars and took their status very seriously. The pictures just absolutely cheapened the whole site and the whole cougar' concept no wonder there were such varying views on the subject. There were women dressed in cheap animal prints with bleached blonde hair and bright red lips don't get me wrong I'm quite partial to that look myself but these women looked dirty' and certainly not sophisicated or classy looking at all. Could these women really portray themselves as cougars? I mean who's to say that they're not? However, genuine cougars I feel would be rather horrified that these less than classy ladies actuallybelieved themselves to be in the same league.
Personally I don't perceive cougar as a derogatory word, and any woman who regards herself as a member of this club should see it as a privilege, never an embarrassment. Real cougars have worked long and hard to earn their stripes and shouldn't feel discouraged by individual comments. When was the last time anyone got upset over an older man going out with a younger woman? Double standards I fear! However, that said I do believe there are two definitive types of cougar the genuine ones who are classicly beautiful, sassy, confident and know exactly what they want and the newly named vougar those who arevulgar and derogatory in their approach, belonging more on a porn site than a dating one!
