There are many wonderful places to visit when you choose to spend time in Austria. But one particular city that you should include in your itinerary to this wonderful country is Salzburg. It is often referred to as the "Rom of the North" because of the large number of churches that are within its walls.
Yet although a very small city in comparison to the likes of Paris, Madrid or even Rome itself there are a great selection of attractions for you to enjoy during your visit. Below we take a look at just a number of the attractions that you should consider spending time in Salzburg.
1. Hohensalzburg Fortress This is to be found high above the city and is the biggest of all the fully preserved castles to be found in Europe. To reach it you can either take the Festungsbahn (Funicular Railway) or of course if you feel up to it walk up to it.
2. Hagenauer House This is where Mozart was born and lived until he reached the age of 17. The museum houses a number of exhibits relating to his life as a child when he lived on the third floor with his family of this property. Along with the violin he used as a child there are a number of his other instruments housed here as well. What makes this museum so special is that the house is where he was actually born.
3. Salzburg Residenz This was formerly the home to the Salzburg Prince Archbishops. Today you may wander around its impressive and very extensive buildings learning more about what life was like for those that lived within it. Plus also there is an excellent art gallery housed in this building known as the Residenz Galley and within it you can few works by Rubens, Brueghel and Rembrandt.
