Try before you buy is always a good idea. However it is also useful as it gives you time to try out a few different types of races and classes to see which one suits you best before you actually start paying for the game through your monthly subscription.
Before you even play the game you should choose from 1 of the 4 different server types. You must choose a server before you get to the stage of creating your own personal avatar. The four servers are:
1. Normal.
2. PvP.
3. RP.
4. Role Playing & PvP
The normal, or standard, server is your first choice. In the PvP mode players can engage in one on one combat at any time during game play. In RP (which stands for Role Playing) there are very specific rules and regulations that must be followed so you should careful read and review this type of server before you join. Choice 4 is self explanatory.
It is often a good idea to try a normal server the first time you play. You can always swap to a different server later.
Also look at the population of a particular server. A medium sized server with a fairly good population (but not an overcrowded one) will have a strong economy and plenty of opportunities to join groups and guilds.
You will have to choose which faction you want to belong to. There are two separate factions.
1. The Horde faction.
2. The Alliance.
As a general rule of thumb Alliance members are younger and less experienced. Many players who want a more challenging Warcraft experience will choose to join the Horde.
It is a good idea to also test different types of characters. When you test different factions, races and different classes you will soon realise which particular type of character will suit how you want to play the game and which environment you feel most comfortable in.
There are also in-game levelling guides that are available as game add-ons by third party companies. In-game guides steer you clear from those silly useless quests that offer no skill levelling points or items and show you, within the game, how to find and complete quests that will level your character up super quick.
