subject: Cerebral Palsy In Infants [print this page]

Cerebral palsy can be a big problem for many children. This disability can also affect infants. You may not know what you can do for an infant that is dealing with cerebral palsy. It may seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be if you know the treatments.

How It Happens

There are many people that wonder how cerebral palsy happens in infants. Most of the science is not sure either. Some believe that infants born with cerebral palsy have this problem because, we there was a twin in utro with them, and that the blood supply to the baby was not enough before them.

What Can You Do?

There are a few things that can be done for infants with cerebral palsy. The first is to make sure that they get medications right away. This way they have a better chance of not having to deal with major muscle issues.

Another way that you can deal with cerebral palsy and a baby is, to make sure it has physical therapy right away. This will help the muscles to stay strong and to work better for the baby. This will also help to keep any type of spasms to a minimum.

Another way to help the baby with cerebral palsy, is surgery. Surgery can be done to correct muscle problems that developed before birth and could cause problems later on in life. Surgery should be a last resort because of the complications that can come from it. Babies are not really built to have a surgery right away after birth. If a family decide this surgery is the best option for them, they may decide to wait until the child is a little bit older and can handle the rigors that go with surgery.

Many babies that are born with cerebral palsy go on to have a good life. The trick is getting the treatment that the child needs right after birth. This way they will have a good chance of getting through the first and hardest months of their lives and their parents will get a better grasp on the kind of treatment that they need.
