subject: Installing A Single Hung Window In A New Wall [print this page] When framing up the opening for a new single hung window, be sure that you have good plumb studs on both sides, and place the cross pieces - for the top and bottom - to create the opening. Be absolutely sure that the bottom edge is level, and frame the opening so that it's half an inch too large; that way you'll room to adjust the window.
Put the window in the opening to check for size, and then place it aside. Cut the sheathing to have the right sided hole, and nail in place. After that, attach a plastic moisture barrier over the sheathing, and slice it so that it can wrap around all four sides. Staple it along the bottom and sides, and just hold it in place with tape on the top. Next, put flashing tape on the sill, two strips: one each along the inside and outside edge, and cut the strips so that they extend up the sides about six inches.
Position spacers on the sill, and then place the single hung window in the opening. Then place more shims around the window to get it level and plumb. Using two-inch roofing nails, attach the nailing fins.
After that, apply flashing tape along the sides, and cut the tape four inches too long. Center it so it hangs over two inches each side. Then do the some on the top, but make it only one inch on each side. Then slip down the moisture barrier down and tape it.
Insert insulation around the single hung window on the inside and out. Apply waterproof sealant to the outside, slip installation fins on the sides, top and bottom of the outside and apply more sealant. After that, drywall the inside.
